Welcome to an architectural model build. Here I plan to create part of the hospital that Rick Grimes (The Walking Dead) wakes up in. The scene can be found in Season 1 Episode 1, it’s an amazing scene which really sets your state of mind from the rest of the season.
PLUG** You can buy The Walking Dead from your local friendly Amazon store, which I’m sure you already know. **PLUG
Architectural Model – The Build
The first process I had to deal with was creating a blueprint for the basic shape. To do this I went to ‘old faithful’, Google. There are a few street view photos here which are handy because the t.v. show only shows a view from the car park.
Google Maps was also a very handy tool as you can measure distance. I just zoom into the map and took all the details I needed.
Once my blueprint had been drawn-out onto grid paper, the build can start, here I’m going to be using foam board.
Below you can see how I designed the window patten. The idea is to cut holes on the main building where the windows are to go, lay these templates over the top and slide in tinted perspex behind to create a nice window effect.
For the outside colour I found a can of paint in my local Halfords. It’s textured to give a sandy look, I tested it out first on some scrape work and was happy with the results so went with it.
Below I am using 400 grit wet ‘n’ dry to create a tarmac/felt roof texture. It’s very easy to cut and provides a very realistic feel to the model.
